St Etheldreda Norwich
In 1981 St Ethedreda was set up as an artist studio by two graduate sculptors from the Norwich School of Art. As with St Martin at Oak it was recognised that there was a demand for relatively cheap facilities for local people who did not want to move to London. Today the studio operates as a charity and is home to ten artists who are masters of a variety of disciplines including: painting, printing & sculpting.
The facilities are described by Mike Chapman, who works in the church as being “fairly rudimentary…however, it offers good light and an atmosphere which is conducive to work”. This has enabled it to attract a wide mix of people. In 1995 a mezzanine floor was added which extended the studio space and the numbers operating there.
Visiting is normally by arrangement however the artists do take part in Norwich’s Open Studio week end event in May which usually attracts up to 150 visitors.
