St Helen Bishopgate Today
St Helen Church is part of the The Great Hospital complex founded by Bishop Walter de Suffield in 1249, ‘in remission of my sins,’ to care for ‘decrepit’ priests. With over 750 years of continuous activity, The Great Hospital is now a charity with a remit to provide housing and care for older Norwich residents with limited means.
It provides a wonderful community for some 300 people enjoying a City centre haven of peace and tranquility within a short walk from all the city amenities. Located by the River Wensum it contains not only its own church of St Helens, but full catering facilities as well as the unique Swan Pond that once reared this medieval delicacy for prosperous English citizens.
